Mission Statement
The Madison Heights Youth Soccer Association (MHYSA) based in Madison Heights, Michigan
is a 100% volunteer run organization formed in 2000 with the purpose to teach and
promote the game of soccer for youths within the city of Madison Heights and surrounding
communities. MHYSA organizes recreational and travel teams consisting of both young
men and women ranging in age from 4 to 19 years old. MHYSA currently has over 300
registered players and over 40 adult volunteers.
MHYSA has been a nonprofit organization with a 501(c)(3) designation as defined
by the United States Internal Revenue Code since 2001.
Thanks to the dedicated efforts of the Board of Directors and adult volunteers our
efforts and energies are directed to the following objectives:
- Strive to develop players at all levels of play (recreational, travel and premier)
by building and improving their skills, fitness, confidence and sense of teamwork.
- Promote and encourage high standards of sportsmanship and fair play.
History
The City of Madison Heights (City) recreation department ran the soccer program
before 2000. The City approached the parents that were in the city run program and
asked them to take over the soccer program. A group of parents lead by Angus Cameron
(the AC in MHYSA's logo) formed MHYSA and in the Fall of 2000 began conducting the
soccer program for the youths of Madison Heights, Michigan.
The first Board of Directors consisted of the following volunteers:

Who Operates MHYSA?
MHYSA is governed by a set of bylaws that has a volunteer Board of Directors, which
is elected annually by the general membership at the club's Annual General Meeting
held in June. Typically, Board positions are for 2 year terms with half the Board
positions being open for election each year. For the current list of Board of Directors

Operating rules for the club have been established for the day-to-day operations
of the club.

Seasons
MHYSA has 2 seasons a year, Fall and Spring.
Divisions & Ages
MHYSA recreational division consists of the following groups:
- Under 6 years old (Coed)
- Under 8 years old (Coed)
- Under 10 years old (Coed & Girls)

Starting in the Fall of 2010 MHYSA is introducing a TOTS Soccer program geared toward 2 to 4 year olds.
MHYSA also offers a Select Soccer division (travel soccer) that provides more structured
training and competition for those children that have the desire to increase their
knowledge of the game, want to sharpen their skills and technique to the best of
their potential and have a passion for the game. For more information about the

Who Coaches?
All coaches are volunteer coaches. Most of them have children on the team they are
coaching. Some of our coaches coach multiple teams in a season. Coaches spend anywhere
from 4 to 10 hours per week coaching the children depending on the divisions. The
older the children get the longer and more frequent the practices. Coaches may have
to travel to other cities to coach games.
MHYSA provides full reimbursement for any training or certification a coach may
pursue (reimbursement is given once the coach earns a passing grade and/or completes
the course).
Who Referees?
Referees are certified by United States Soccer Federation and are assigned by a
regional referee assignor.
Under 6 and Under 8 divisions do not use certified referees. These divisions use
junior high or high school students that have knowledge of the game and are paid
referees. Most of these referees have played for MHYSA or are still playing for
MHYSA in an older division. If a referee is not available for an Under 6 or Under
8 game a parent is asked to volunteer to referee the game.
Older divisions, Under 10 and above, use certified referees that are paid to referee
the game. Fees for the referees are set by the Michigan Referee Committee.

How Is The Money Spent?

- Hardship scholarships - Provide free registration for families that cannot afford

- Partial or full reimbursement for recreational teams attending tournaments.
- Equipment for fields (i.e. goals, nets, cones, corner flags, locks for goals, etc.)
- Training equipment for coaches (i.e. small goals, cones, practice jerseys, etc.)
- Referee fees
- Association fees (i.e. State, travel, etc.)
- Insurance
- Advertising (i.e. flyers for schools, printed ads in newspapers, web site, promotional
items, etc.)
- Administration costs (i.e. paper, forms, software, banking, meetings, etc.)
- Training for coaches.
- Cost of merchandise that is sold (i.e. shirts, hats, jackets, bumper stickers, uniforms,
screen printing, etc.)
- End of season participation award (i.e. medals, trophies, shirts, etc.)
- Donation to community events (i.e. parades, fireworks, etc.)
- Concession stand expenses (i.e. equipment, food, licensing, etc.)
